Before the fit-out starts
Most small fit-outs need four things from the electrician: a lighting layout, power where the till, displays and equipment will sit, a supply large enough for anything heavy, and testing and certification before the doors open. How much each involves depends on the premises and what is already there, which is why quotes are prepared against store layout drawings or a site survey.
Track, display and general lighting positioned from your drawings so the shopfront, the displays and the customer space read as intended.
Outlets where the till, displays, fridges and office equipment will actually sit, rather than where the last tenant left them.
Commercial kitchens, air conditioning and heavier machinery may need a 3-phase board or a larger supply, which is checked before the quote is fixed.
New circuits and alterations are inspected and tested, and an Electrical Installation Certificate is issued for the work so the paperwork is ready when the premises open.
Have layout drawings? Send them over and James will quote against them.

On a fit-out the electrical work runs in two passes around the joiners and the decorators, with the board and the testing in between:
Lighting, socket and equipment positions are agreed from your drawings and the fitter’s programme, so the first fix goes in before anything closes up.
Containment and cables are run to every lighting, socket and equipment position while the ceilings and walls are still open.
The distribution board is fitted or altered and the new circuits connected, including a 3-phase board where the equipment needs one.
Once the shopfit is in, the lighting, sockets, signage supplies and, where included, emergency lighting are fitted and connected.
Every new circuit is inspected and tested, the Electrical Installation Certificate is completed and the paperwork handed over so it is ready before the premises open.

On completion
The paperwork a landlord, insurer or fire risk assessor may ask for, handed over when the work is signed off.
Records the new circuits and alterations with their inspection and test results, confirming the work was carried out to BS 7671 (18th Edition). Any applicable building warrant or approved certification requirements are assessed separately.
A labelled schedule at the board showing which circuit feeds the lighting, the till, the kitchen and the rest of the premises, so the next trade or tenant is not guessing.
Where emergency lighting is included in the agreed scope, a completion certificate for that installation is provided alongside the EIC.
The fit-out certificate covers the new work on the day it is signed off. Periodic inspection of the fixed installation and routine emergency lighting testing are carried out under Commercial EICRs & Emergency Lighting.

For anything beyond moving plug-in equipment, yes. New circuits, a new lighting layout and any alteration to the existing wiring need to be designed, installed, inspected and tested to BS 7671, and the work is certified so you have the paperwork for your landlord and insurer. James quotes against your layout drawings or a site survey so the electrical scope is agreed before the fitter starts.
Where the premises are already trading, the work is planned with you around the hours the shop is open and the parts of the premises that need to stay live. What is possible depends on the scope, the layout and where the board sits, so it is agreed as part of the quote rather than promised in advance.
It depends on the premises and on its fire risk assessment. Many small commercial units need some emergency lighting on the escape routes, and larger or more complex premises need more, but the requirement comes from the assessment for your building rather than from a fixed rule for shops. Where emergency lighting is part of the agreed scope it is installed and certified with the fit-out, and its routine testing is covered under Commercial EICRs & Emergency Lighting.
Often, yes, but it depends on the supply the premises already has. Commercial kitchens, air conditioning units and heavier machinery may need a 3-phase distribution board, and where the incoming supply is single-phase a larger connection may involve an application to the network operator, which is assessed before the quote is fixed. Boards and supplies on their own are covered under Three-Phase Electrical Work.
Yes. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued for the new circuits and the board, recording the inspection and test results for the work. It covers the work described on it; it does not certify unrelated parts of an older installation, which are inspected separately under an EICR.
Window display illumination is part of the lighting work described above, and external signage supplies and shopfront lighting can be included in the agreed scope. Tell James what the sign maker needs at the quote stage so the supply and its switching are run in at first fix rather than added afterwards.
Tell James what the premises are, what the fit-out or alteration involves, when you hope to open and whether you have layout drawings. Quotes are prepared against store layout drawings or a site survey.
