Does Your Fuse Box Need Replacing?

Your consumer unit is the main safety centre of your property’s electrical system. Older boards with rewireable fuses or basic dual-RCD protection often lack the features needed for today’s high-demand appliances, EV chargers or heat pumps. None of the signs below automatically means replacement is necessary — the condition and suitability of the installation determine the work required.

  • Rewireable fuses or no RCD protection

Older boards often lack the protection expected of a modern installation.

  • Repeated tripping, or unusual noises from the board

Buzzing, crackling or humming from a fuse board needs urgent assessment.

  • A proposed new high-power circuit

EV chargers, heat pumps and electric showers change what the board has to carry.

  • An EICR has recommended it

C1, C2 or FI observations against the board are a common trigger for replacement.

What a Modern Consumer Unit Adds

An older board with rewireable fuses or a single shared RCD cannot offer the protection below. These are the devices a replacement board can carry, and what each one does and does not do.

Domestic consumer unit in a utility cupboard

Metal-Clad Non-Combustible Enclosure

BS 7671 requires domestic consumer units to have a non-combustible enclosure, or be enclosed in a suitable non-combustible cabinet. Steel is a common solution. This helps limit fire spread but does not eliminate all fire risks.

RCBO Individual Circuit Protection

RCBOs protect separate circuits, so a fault on one circuit can be disconnected without switching off the others sharing an RCD. Other faults or upstream devices can still interrupt a wider supply.

Surge Protection Devices (SPD)

SPDs can reduce damage from transient overvoltages affecting electronics, boilers, computers and appliances. Their protection has limits and they do not guarantee protection from every surge or lightning event.

Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDD)

Where required or appropriate, Arc Fault Detection Devices detect certain types of dangerous arcing and disconnect the affected circuit. They supplement other protective measures rather than guaranteeing that a fire cannot occur.

How Much Does a Consumer Unit Replacement Cost?

What a Consumer Unit Replacement Involves

Replacing your consumer unit updates the backbone of your electrical installation. It is a systematic electrical procedure that includes testing your property’s existing fixed wiring:

  1. Pre-Replacement Inspection

Assessing main earthing, bonding conductors (water and gas services), and existing circuit conditions.

  2. Safe Power Isolation

Disconnecting the main electrical supply to safely remove the legacy fuse board.

  3. New Board Installation

Mounting the non-combustible enclosure, fitting RCBOs, main switch, and Surge Protection Device (SPD).

  4. Full Inspection & Circuit Testing

Testing every circuit for insulation resistance, earth continuity, and correct tripping speeds.

  5. Certification & Records

Test results recorded and the paperwork handed over on completion.

A replacement is often planned alongside full or partial rewiring or an electrical safety inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Consumer Unit Replacements

How do I know if my fuse box needs replacing?

An older fuse box, missing RCD protection, unusual noises, repeated tripping or a proposed new high-power circuit are reasons to arrange an assessment. They do not automatically mean replacement is necessary; the condition and suitability of the installation determine the work required.

How long will the power be off during a fuse box replacement?

Power isolation typically lasts between 4 to 8 hours depending on the number of circuits and the condition of the existing wiring. James will inform you in advance so you can plan around the outage.

Will replacing my fuse box require rewiring my whole house?

Not necessarily. Replacing a consumer unit upgrades the central control board. Testing can reveal existing wiring faults that need attention. James explains any repairs and agrees their scope and cost before proceeding.

Do I get a safety certificate after the replacement?

Yes. You will receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) recording the installation work, inspection and test results. Its scope and any limitations are stated; it does not certify that every unrelated part of an older installation meets all current requirements.
