Kitchen Electrics and Cooker Installation Across Brechin, Angus

Brechin Sparks is James Leslie, working from a base in Brechin and covering the DD9 postcode area, Montrose, Forfar, Arbroath, Edzell and Dundee within an approximate 40-mile radius.

One point of contact for the cooker supply, the sockets, the lighting and the certification, timed around your kitchen fitter’s first and second fix. A new dedicated cooker circuit is assessed on the cable run distance from the consumer unit and the board’s RCD protection, so an older board may need a consumer unit upgrade first. The kitchen extractor fan is covered under extractor fans, and sockets elsewhere in the house under extra sockets.

Does Your Cooker Need Its Own Circuit?

Often, but not always: it depends on the appliance kW rating, the condition of the existing cable and whether an isolator switch is already in place. Where a suitable circuit exists, the cooker or hob is connected to it; otherwise a new dedicated cooker circuit is run from the consumer unit. Cable size and protective equipment are selected for the appliance load, route and installation conditions.

  • A suitable existing cooker circuit

Where the existing circuit, its cable and the isolator switch are in good condition and sized for the appliance, the cooker or hob is connected to it. Appliance kW rating, cable condition and isolator switch presence are what decide this.

  • No cooker circuit, or one that is not up to the appliance

A new dedicated cooker circuit is run from the consumer unit. It is assessed on the cable run distance from the consumer unit and the board’s RCD protection.

  • An older consumer unit

A new circuit needs a spare way and suitable RCD protection at the board. Where the board cannot take it, a consumer unit upgrade is explained and quoted before the kitchen work is agreed.

  • Working with your kitchen fitter

Brechin Sparks serves homeowners, kitchen fitters, and landlords. Alterations are quoted against your kitchen layout plan before fitting starts, covering socket moves, lighting points and cooker switches.

First fix and second fix

What Does the Electrical Work in a Kitchen Refit Involve?

The electrics are done in two visits around the kitchen fitter: the cables go in before the units, and the sockets, switches and appliances are connected once the worktops are on.

  1. Agree the appliance list and the layout

James goes through the kitchen layout plan with you and your kitchen fitter: which appliances are going in, where the cooker or hob sits, where the sockets and lighting are wanted, and what the existing circuits can carry.

  2. First fix before the units go in

Cables are run for the cooker supply, the sockets and appliance spurs, the lighting and the extractor fan while the walls and floor are open, so nothing has to be chased out once the kitchen is fitted.

  3. Consumer unit connections and any new circuits

A new dedicated cooker circuit, or any other new circuit, is connected at the consumer unit with the protective device selected for the load and the cable. Any work the board needs to take it has been agreed beforehand.

  4. Second fix once the worktops are on

Sockets, switched fused spurs, isolators, the cooker connection unit and the lighting are fitted, and the cooker or hob is connected.

  5. Test, certify and demonstrate

Every new or altered circuit is tested and the results are recorded on the certificate for the work. James shows you where the cooker switch and the appliance isolators are before leaving.

Where an older kitchen is being stripped back to the walls, the wiring feeding it can be assessed alongside a partial rewire.

What you are left with

The certificate matches the work: a new circuit is recorded on one form, an alteration to an existing circuit on another.

Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)

Issued for any new circuit, such as a dedicated cooker circuit run from the consumer unit. It records the design, the inspection and the test results for that circuit. Any applicable building warrant or approved certification requirements are assessed separately.

Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate

Issued for additions or alterations to an existing circuit: sockets moved or added, a fused spur for an integrated appliance, a cooker connected to a suitable existing circuit or lighting points altered. It records the work and the test results for that circuit.

Appliance connection details and manufacturer instructions

A note of how each cooker, hob or oven was connected and the circuit it is on, with the manufacturer’s installation instructions left with you for the appliance records.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Electrics and Cooker Installation

Can I connect my own electric cooker?

It is safer not to, and the connection itself is only part of the job. A cooker or hob needs a circuit that can carry it, a suitable cooker connection unit and an isolator switch within reach, and the cable, its condition and the protective device at the board all have to be checked against the appliance. James connects the cooker, checks the circuit it is on and records the work on the appropriate certificate.

Does an induction hob need a different supply?

It depends on the hob’s rating. Some induction hobs draw more than the cooker or hob they replace, so the existing circuit, cable and isolator are checked against the manufacturer’s stated rating before it is connected. Where the existing circuit is suitable, the hob is connected to it; where it is not, a new dedicated circuit is run from the consumer unit. James assesses this from the appliance specification you send.

How many sockets should a kitchen have?

There is no fixed number. The layout is planned around the appliances going in, the worktop areas you will use for small appliances and where the integrated appliances need their switched fused spurs. James goes through the kitchen layout plan with you and adds the sockets and spurs the design calls for, with the circuits assessed to carry them.

Do kitchen sockets need to be a certain distance from the sink?

Socket positions in a kitchen are chosen for safety and for the layout, and that includes keeping them clear of the sink and the hob. James positions the sockets on the kitchen plan so they are usable at the worktop without being placed where water or heat could reach them.

When should the electrician come in a kitchen refit?

Twice: a first fix before the units go in and a second fix after the worktops are on. At first fix the cables are run for the cooker, sockets, lighting and extractor while the walls are open; at second fix the sockets, isolators, cooker connection unit and lighting are fitted and the appliances connected. James agrees both visits with you and the kitchen fitter so the electrical work does not hold up the fit.

Do I get a certificate for kitchen electrical work?

Yes. A new circuit, such as a dedicated cooker circuit, is recorded on an Electrical Installation Certificate, and alterations to existing circuits are recorded on a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate. Full BS 7671 certification is included, and James supplies the certificate appropriate to the work carried out.
