Hardwired or battery

Should a Video Doorbell Be Hardwired or Battery Powered?

Hardwired is usually the better choice where the door can take a permanent supply, although a battery model can still suit a door with no wiring and no practical route for any. Battery doorbells and security cameras can be affected by cold-weather battery drain and wireless connection problems. A compatible permanent power supply reduces reliance on battery charging; Wi-Fi or data-network requirements still need to be checked.

  • Cold weather and battery drain

An Angus winter can shorten the time a battery doorbell or camera runs between charges, and a unit that has gone flat records nothing. A permanent supply removes the charging routine, though it does not change how the product itself behaves.

  • What the existing bell wiring can do

Many homes already have a wired bell push and a transformer near the consumer unit or in a cupboard. Where the transformer is in the 8V–24V AC range the doorbell needs, that wiring can often be reused after a check; where it is not, a new transformer is fitted.

  • Where the doorbell or camera will sit

Door frames, porches, stone walls and rendered fronts each change how a cable can be concealed and how the unit is fixed. James looks at the position before quoting rather than assuming a cable can be hidden.

  • Wi-Fi or data network at the door

Power and connection are separate. A hardwired doorbell still needs a usable Wi-Fi signal or a data connection at the door, and a thick front wall or a distant router can leave a well-powered unit dropping out. Check the signal where the unit will sit before buying.

Hardwired Smart Security & Doorbell Systems

Most enquiries are one of two jobs, or both together: a video doorbell wired to a transformer at the front door, or cameras around the outside of the property. Either way the power supply and the cable route are what James plans first.

Option one

Hardwired video doorbell

Installing step-down transformers (8V–24V AC) and hidden wiring for Ring, Nest, Eufy, and Blink doorbells.

The transformer is usually placed near the consumer unit or in a cupboard, with the low-voltage bell wire run to the door and concealed where the fabric of the building allows. An existing bell push and transformer are checked first; they are reused where they are suitable and replaced where they are not.

Best when: you are tired of charging a battery, there is existing bell wiring or a practical route for new wiring, and the door has a usable Wi-Fi signal.

Option two

Outdoor cameras and floodlight cameras

Mounting IP cameras, floodlight cameras, and smart security systems at optimal height angles. Routing power cables cleanly through exterior walls without unsightly trailing wires.

A floodlight camera can often take the place of an existing outdoor light on the same supply, which keeps the cable run short. A camera on its own needs a power supply routed to it, and where none is nearby a new outdoor power point is quoted with the job.

Best when: you want to see a drive, side path, yard or outbuilding rather than just the front door, or want to replace an existing outside light with a floodlight camera.

Guide prices

How Much Does Video Doorbell or CCTV Installation Cost?

Guide prices run from £80 – £180+ for video doorbell hardwiring and a transformer fit to £120 – £300+ for an outdoor security camera or floodlight fit. Existing doorbell wiring, transformer location, wall thickness, mounting height, power source distance and cable concealment affect the price. Where a camera needs a new outdoor power point, that is quoted alongside the job.

What Does a Hardwired Doorbell or Camera Install Involve?

The order is the same whether it is one doorbell or several cameras: agree the positions, sort out the power, run the cable, mount the unit and prove it works before James leaves.

  1. Agree the positions and what you want to see

James walks the property with you and agrees where each doorbell or camera goes and what it should cover: the door, the drive, a side path or an outbuilding. Mounting height and angle are settled at this stage, along with where the transformer or power supply will sit.

  2. Check the existing bell wiring or plan a new supply

An existing bell push, bell wire and transformer are checked to see whether they suit the doorbell you have chosen. If they do not, or there is no bell wiring, a new transformer or power supply is planned, and for a camera the nearest suitable supply is identified.

  3. Fit the transformer or power supply and run concealed cable

The step-down transformer or camera power supply is fitted, and the cable is run to each position and concealed where the building allows, through exterior walls rather than trailed across them. Any connection to the consumer unit is made with the circuit isolated.

  4. Mount the doorbell or cameras

Each unit is fixed to the agreed position on a suitable bracket or plate, sealed against the weather where it passes through the wall, and connected to its supply.

  5. Power up, confirm the connection with you and tidy

The supply is switched on, the unit is checked for power and a signal at the door, and the connection is confirmed with you before James leaves. Cable entries are made good and the work area is tidied.

On completion

What you are left with

The paperwork depends on how the doorbell or camera was powered: from an existing circuit, or from a new one.

Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate

Issued where a transformer or camera supply is connected to an existing circuit, such as a lighting circuit or a spur. It records the work carried out and the test results for that circuit.

Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)

Issued where a new circuit is run from the consumer unit to feed the cameras or a new outdoor power point. Any applicable building warrant or approved certification requirements are assessed separately.

Product paperwork and settings noted

The manufacturer instructions for the doorbell or cameras, kept with the certificate, along with a note of where the transformer or power supply sits and which circuit feeds it, so a future electrician or the product’s support line can find it.

Video Doorbell and CCTV Installation: Common Questions

Do video doorbells need an electrician?

A battery doorbell usually does not; it is screwed to the frame and charged from a lead. A hardwired doorbell usually does, because it needs a step-down transformer (8V–24V AC) connected to the mains and bell wire run to the door, and any connection to an existing circuit should be tested and certified. James fits the transformer, runs and conceals the wiring and confirms the unit is powered before leaving.

Can a video doorbell use my existing doorbell wiring?

Often, yes. Most hardwired video doorbells run from a transformer in the 8V–24V AC range, so where your existing bell transformer sits within that and the bell wire is in sound condition, both can usually be reused. Older or lower-output transformers are replaced, and some doorbells need a small adapter or the old chime bypassed. James checks the existing setup before quoting, so tell him what is fitted now.

Will the camera work in a power cut?

Not necessarily. A hardwired doorbell or camera stops when its supply does, unless the product has its own battery backup, and your router and broadband will be off as well, so remote viewing usually stops regardless. What happens during an outage depends on the product and how it is powered; James can explain what your chosen unit will do once he knows the model.

Can you fit CCTV without visible cables?

Usually the cable can be concealed to a large degree, but not always completely. Power cables are routed cleanly through exterior walls rather than trailed across them, and runs are kept under eaves, inside porches or behind downpipes where the building allows. Solid stone walls, rendered fronts and long runs across a bare wall can limit what can be hidden. James looks at the route before quoting and tells you where a cable will still show.

Do I need Wi-Fi for a video doorbell?

For almost all consumer video doorbells, yes. A permanent power supply reduces reliance on battery charging, but Wi-Fi or data-network requirements still need to be checked, because the doorbell has to reach your router from the door to send video to your phone. A weak signal at the door is a common cause of dropouts even on a hardwired unit, so check it there before buying.

Do you fit floodlight cameras?

Yes. Floodlight cameras are mounted at the agreed height and angle, often in place of an existing outside light on the same supply, with the cable concealed through the wall. Where there is no existing light or supply, a new power point is quoted alongside the job. Describe the positions you have in mind and James will price the work.
